Art Therapy is a process where art is used to heal trauma where language is a problem. &nbsp;Mostly children come here, many of whom are victims of violence and poverty. The building is conceived of as a sculpture. &nbsp;Merely by entering the building, the user is caused to reconsider their relationship to the environment. &nbsp;The environment is very different from anything a user may have experienced but familiar materials are used thus ensuring that the building is not alienating. &nbsp;The therapy drum is round in form and has been chosen so that everyone is equal and no-one can be put in a corner. &nbsp;Light comes in from above, enabling privacy while simultaneously creating an uplifting environment. &nbsp;The scale of the building is intimate. &nbsp;Indoor and outdoor spaces overlap in function. pavilion is inserted into the lowest terrace of the historic garden of a 1930's house, now a national monument, on the Westcliff ridge of Johannesburg.&nbsp; The pavilion is conceptualised as a landscape, as part of the language of the garden. &nbsp;Garden and pavilion interchange, reflecting and framing each other. &nbsp;The pavilion is made of two rectilinear forms that nestle against, but do not touch, two existing stone retaining walls. These walls became the edges of the building – thus starts the blurring of the boundaries between inside and out; between garden and building. The new building is carefully sited and the height specifically designed such that, even from the lowest terrace, the full view of the existing historic house and the garden terraces is maintained. &nbsp;The fifth facade, a plan view of the roofs, is made of shallow ponds that reflect the trees and sky and is visible from upper terraces.&nbsp; The glass facades of the building reflect the planting at night, and slide away during the day to allow an un-hindered view through the pavilion to the old stone retaining walls beyond.<img width="3508" height="2480" width_o="3508" who have been orphaned by natural disasters, war and poverty.&nbsp; This Children’s Home will be one of many that have been built around the world.&nbsp; The homes aim to create nurturing environments that reflect the culture and heritage of the communities that the children come from.&nbsp; The western cape area has the largest population of Muslims living in South Africa which dates back to their first arrival on the shores of the cape in the 1650’s.&nbsp; It is within this community that the orphanage will be built. The key ideas of our design response are: To create safety and security for these vulnerable children. To incorporate Islamic design principles. To integrate the home into the broader landscape of small agriculture to the one side and a tight sub-urban residential fabric to the other. The sustainability of the construction methods and self-sustainability of the home The site is a relatively flat, brownfield site with no natural features and bounded on two sides by roads.&nbsp; It is positioned between an area of productive small-scale farming to the east and a relatively dense sub-urban residential area to the west.&nbsp; As a way of integrating the home into the context, the scale of the buildings is similar to that of its neighbours both in height and density, and the design includes a walled productive garden that provides food for the home.&nbsp; Whilst the gardens are functional, they are also designed to be beautiful.&nbsp; The home recognizes its urban location and simultaneously provides a refuge. The site is broadly laid out along the lines of Islamic gardens with separate courtyards corresponding to different functions and each with their own character, connected through water. &nbsp; Thresholds and transition spaces are used to mediate between the different courtyards and buildings.&nbsp; The layering of space from public to private also ensures that the children’s sleeping and play areas are in the most private part of the site offering a sanctuary from the busy activities of daily life. The prayer room forms part of the more public courtyard and is orientated towards Qiblah, enabling prayer and Quran recitation to become an important focus of the space. Visitors are welcomed and contained in this courtyard that is shaded by creepers with scented flowers growing over a pergola structure.&nbsp; This creates a shaded canopy under which ideas and lessons can be shared - simultaneously a reference to historic Islamic and African places of learning and community.&nbsp; We have rendered our professional services for this project pro bono as our way of ‘paying forward’ for the healthy development of a future generation.&nbsp; We hope to assist in making a special home for children where they can feel part of an extended Muslim family and community. Parkhurst into antique shops, boutiques and small cafés is an interesting urban/suburban development that can be traced back to similar gentrification processes in other global cities such as London and New York.&nbsp; &nbsp;In Johannesburg, however, many of these converted houses still maintain a residential, closed-off relationship with the high street through their existing boundary walls and set-backs from the road. This project engages with this disconnect with the street through the linking and conversion of two suburban houses on a busy street into retail shops. &nbsp;It creates a much more vibrant urban edge, encouraging a direct and open relationship with the street.&nbsp; Although the existing facades of the two converted homes have been maintained, the removal of the boundary wall and the introduction of a covered walkway creates a new urban relationship to the street. The new shops fit comfortably into the residential neighbourhood, maintaining its scale and nature, while simultaneously giving a fresh face to the retail strip. ve; in walking distance yet far from landscape was the starting point for this project – the client having brought only images of gardens to our first meeting.&nbsp; Shifting geometries that accommodate existing trees and topography are used to set up a dance of built, unbuilt and planted spaces.&nbsp; Growing trees or gumpoles representing trees are interspersed in a seemingly random pattern giving the impression of a forest moving through the centre of the house. &nbsp;The ceiling rafters of this central space twist and turn and, together with the dappled light from randomly placed skylights, create a sense of a forest canopy that moves from outside in and beyond. Rooms, both internal and external, are organized around the central gallery space – courtyards, verandahs, lounge, dining and kitchen spaces on ground floor with balconies, bedrooms and bathrooms at first floor level.&nbsp; The informal, almost invisible ‘front door’ is intentional, ‘found’ as you meander through the landscape.&nbsp; The pool is 25m long for training and has naturally filtered water that circulates via three tiered ponds with plants and wildlife . &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; <img width="2592" height="3888" width_o="2592" height_o="3888" Johannesburg.&nbsp; &nbsp;Often beset by limiting ‘architectural guidelines’, a simple response to a design brief can become a challenging negotiation of rules.&nbsp; Fortunately here, the team of client, architect and contractor worked well together and were able to produce a happy project ︎. The house lives easily and is centred on children and around the garden. &nbsp;Two ‘barns’ are inserted between the existing trees and set back on the stand.&nbsp; This ensures a large garden and pockets of planting between the structures.&nbsp; The barns are simply divided by function – public living areas and private bedroom spaces link by a see-through walkway.&nbsp; The scale, colour and materiality of each barn is specific to use, the ‘good-taste’ exterior colour palette of the estate ‘moderated’ by outburst of lurid pink inside the garage and bright yellow, green and blue behind cupboard doors and inside courtyards. Building orientation is carefully considered ensuring spaces are warm in winter and cool in summer.&nbsp; Rain water is collected, grey water recycled.&nbsp; Solar panels heat domestic water which is also used for under floor heating.&nbsp; Photovoltaic panels ensure uninterrupted power during South Africa’s many power outages. <img width="3024" height="4032" width_o="3024" height_o="4032" representing the mountains and the ripple of the balustrade the waves of the ocean.&nbsp; Colours and materials blend into the fyn-bos biosphere, the whole house often disappearing in early morning mist, invisible from the road below.&nbsp; High level windows capture views of the mountain hovering above – all adding to the allure of an escape to the elements.&nbsp; &nbsp; <img width="749" been gutted and left abandoned for many years. What started as a ‘fix me up and sell on’ project, became a work of love and a journey to their forever home. Understanding from us the heritage importance of the house, we worked closely to update and rejuvenate it to suit their needs while retaining the original character and historical value of the work.&nbsp; houseM was designed in 1985 by Pancho Guedes, architect, artist, sculptor and professor in South Africa, Mozambique and Portugal, whose idiosyncratic work drew on local materials and skills, exploring organic forms of indigenous construction while being rooted in modernism. Having studied under Guedes and finding resonance with his work – the link to art, the hand-made quality, curvalinear forms and raw materials – making the restoration a joy that required both the liberty and confidence to change and update things (small rooms, a poky entrance), a sensitivity to judiciously add new pieces (atmospheric uplighting to the vaults, brightly coloured mosaics) and care to lovingly restore and protect existing elements (joinery, sculptural chimney, a ceramic mural).&nbsp; 3 garages and an ‘invisible’ cottage were added at street level, disguised below a planted roof above that has circular cut-outs for light, ventilation and an ancient Ginko tree. The vaulted roofs of the original buiding were all retained, patios covered and convoluted spaces simplified to have views through to new garden rooms with ponds. Facebrick was matched, original doors restored and copied; brick floors exchanged for timber and local terrazzo and hand-glazed tiles introduced. The client and KOA worked closely to shape the interiors from choosing materials and colours throughout, to detail furniture layouts and selections including fabrics, lighting and fittings.&nbsp; The result is a contemporary up-market home, with beautiful interiors, that seamlessly works with the original fabric. <img width="1417" height="945" width_o="1417" height_o="945"
